Wednesday, Apr 25, 2018

Vietnam is the sixth leading country of origin for all international students in the United States, in both higher education and in secondary schools, and as the Vietnamese economy continues to grow at a rapid rate, so, too, does the number of Vietnamese families sending children to study in the US.

According to the US Department of Homeland Security Student and Exchange Visitor Information System’s (SEVIS) December 2017 figures, there were 31,389 active Vietnamese students in the US, a number that reflects the steady growth in enrollment of Vietnamese students in both US higher education and US secondary school programs over the last 16 years (Institute of International Education’s (IIE) A World on the Move).  As of December 2017, SEVIS figures showed 4,129 Vietnamese students enrolled in US secondary schools (Mapping SEVIS by the Numbers).

Where Do They Go?

Most Vietnamese students go to California and Texas due to family ties and the large communities of Vietnamese that settled there after the war.  Washington and Massachusetts likewise have large populations of Vietnamese immigrants and so networks of support for incoming Vietnamese international students.
